Regionally Speaking

It's so easy to get caught up in what's going on around us that we forget that there are an amazing amount of other interesting cultures out there.  What better way to introduce yourself to those cultures than to read the local magazines for a view of who and what makes up a community you may not be familiar with, but might interest you to visit or become a part of eventually.

There is a great article about New York's local food that is becoming a number one sensation.  No, it's not gourmet, it's more of what you might consider fast food with a twist. I've never tasted a Vietnamese hoagie called a Bánh Mi (pronounced bun me), but it sounds like a glorious departure from a plain old Subway lunch. Check out page 61 of the April 13,2009 issue or the website here for the 411 on this secret New York lunch special.

Transitioning From The Information Age To The Biomedical Age

If you haven't gotten the flu this spring, you're lucky. It was awful! I was down for at least two weeks.  It appears that I had a viral and bacterial infection at the same time so needless to say I was pretty wiped out for a few days until I got my steroid shot and stared my z-pack.

Well I know that the antibiotics are no help for a viral infection, but it definitely helps for the bacterial infection.  Of course, we've all heard that many strains of bacteria are becoming immune to our antibiotics and there is concern that this will happen sooner than later.  Thank goodness there are smart people working on this problem.

BonnieBasslerIn my humble opinion, this video is amazing!

This is the kind of research that shows the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to defending yourself against a deadly and even not so deadly bacterial infection. Bonnie Bassler and her team at Princeton are discovering how bacteria talk to each other.  The inspiring and more important part is she is learning how to turn off their conversation in order to stop a full blown infection.

Bonnie's research, plus the amazing research done in RNA interference , and the lifted ban on stem cell research are only some of the reasons I feel that within the next 5 to 10 years we will transition from the Information Age to the Biomedical Age.  With the stock market the way it is right now pharmaceutical stocks are currently a bargain.  As Forbes points out in their article "The Profit Pill ," the trick will be to figure out which of the bigger companies are buying the research firms with most promising drugs in their pipeline.

ForbesMagazine This recession won't last forever...if you are into investing in your future now is the time to be paying attention to where we are all going and not get sucked into how bad everything appears at the moment.  Check out our list of Business and Money magazines and start looking for who is working with who and what they are doing. This is what Warren Buffet does, he always goes with what he understands. Take the "advice" articles with a grain of salt, they are usually based on speculation tainted with personal motives. Speculation is a dangerous path since it gives us fun stuff like "housing bubbles" and $4-5 a gallon gas prices.

The good news is...at least the future is looking very bright in medicine!

New Hair and Skin Care...Check The Produce Section?

Fitness Magazine I think my wife is crazy, but I'm not a woman so what do I know.  Once a month she spends $12 for her special hair coloring products that are the same color as her hair already.  She says it makes her hair softer, shinier and more manageable.  Bah humbug! J

I am hoping that the article on pages 36-41 in the April 2009 issue of Fitness magazine is going to help me keep some cash in my wallet this month.  See "Feed Your Face" for a very interesting take on how food can be used to make your hair shine and your skin glow without all the extra chemicals that are impossible pronounce on all those beauty product bottles.  Supposedly,  my wife could pay $4 for a box of black tea and get the same results she gets with her hair coloring product. I like that, it's cheap and one box will last at least six months!

In fact, you can check out all the other food induced beauty secrets here.
