| Transitioning From The Information Age To The Biomedical Age
If you haven't gotten the flu this spring, you're lucky. It was awful! I was down for at least two weeks. It appears that I had a viral and bacterial infection at the same time so needless to say I was pretty wiped out for a few days until I got my steroid shot and stared my z-pack.
Well I know that the antibiotics are no help for a viral infection, but it definitely helps for the bacterial infection. Of course, we've all heard that many strains of bacteria are becoming immune to our antibiotics and there is concern that this will happen sooner than later. Thank goodness there are smart people working on this problem.
In my humble opinion, this video is amazing!
This is the kind of research that shows the light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to defending yourself against a deadly and even not so deadly bacterial infection. Bonnie Bassler and her team at Princeton are discovering how bacteria talk to each other. The inspiring and more important part is she is learning how to turn off their conversation in order to stop a full blown infection.
Bonnie's research, plus the amazing research done in RNA interference , and the lifted ban on stem cell research are only some of the reasons I feel that within the next 5 to 10 years we will transition from the Information Age to the Biomedical Age. With the stock market the way it is right now pharmaceutical stocks are currently a bargain. As Forbes points out in their article "The Profit Pill ," the trick will be to figure out which of the bigger companies are buying the research firms with most promising drugs in their pipeline.
This recession won't last forever...if you are into investing in your future now is the time to be paying attention to where we are all going and not get sucked into how bad everything appears at the moment. Check out our list of Business and Money magazines and start looking for who is working with who and what they are doing. This is what Warren Buffet does, he always goes with what he understands. Take the "advice" articles with a grain of salt, they are usually based on speculation tainted with personal motives. Speculation is a dangerous path since it gives us fun stuff like "housing bubbles" and $4-5 a gallon gas prices.
The good news is...at least the future is looking very bright in medicine!
