Let The Summer Cookouts Begin!

Cooking Light Magazine May 2009 So this past weekend has not only become a holiday for remembering those who have fallen for the liberties we enjoy here in America, but also a great holiday that initiates the first of many great American summer cookouts. You can check out the history behind American BBQ here from a past newsletter.

At my house we kept it easy, we didn't go out of town, but did grill out. In my opinion, I'm not sure if there is anything better than fresh corn on the cob, watermelon, onion rings and burgers on the grill.  I missed the potato salad and coleslaw though.  My grandmother's German potato salad would have been good, but we were lazy...so maybe we'll reconsider on the forth of July.

The nice thing is a lot of great food is coming into season now...you can get sweet corn and watermelon from Florida. You'll alos find that strawberries are becoming more available in the states just north of the Southern states. Check out your local Farmer's markets...it's a great way to get fruits and vegetables for much cheaper than you can buy at the store. Plus as a bonus you are helping your local community. In my garden we picked the spinach last week. The sugar snap peas are in full swing and my carrots will be ready in another 2-3 weeks.

Bon Appetit Magazine June 2009 Speaking of sugar snap peas, there is a really great recipe in the May 2009 issue of Cooking Light for Chicken Scaloppine with Sugar Snap Peas, Asparagus and Lemon. You can find it online here.

As for grilling for the next cookout...check out the June 2009 issue of Bon Appétit. They take grilling to the next level by combining seasonal vegetables in recipes that will dance on your taste buds. You'll find the Ultimate Summer Party Guide on pages 75 through 91.  They give you three menus to choose from, the "Modern Fiesta" looks incredible.

Here is their Ultimate Summer Party Guide article online...

Happy Summer grilling!

The 5 Rules For A Summertime Stomach

Womans Health Magazine May 2009 Ever since my wife saw my old high school competitive swimming pictures, I've gotten on this kick to get my abs back before my body decides that it no longer wants to hold its shape no matter what I do.  Not sure if this article will help me since it is written for women, but I was pretty impressed with the tips included...surprisingly not one crunch was listed.

  1. Work the core muscles
  2. Exercise your butt more
  3. Eat more protein, healthy fats, and eliminate sugar
  4. Reduce stress
  5. Workout less (your abs that is...)

For the specifics what simple exercises to do and why, check out pages 134-139 in the May 2009 issue of Women's Health in the "Look Great Naked" (pre-summer guide) section.

Add Women's Health to your subscriptions and get 10 issues for $15.97 or 68% off the cover price.
