Let The Summer Cookouts Begin!
So this past weekend has not only become a holiday for remembering those who have fallen for the liberties we enjoy here in America, but also a great holiday that initiates the first of many great American summer cookouts. You can check out the history behind American BBQ here from a past newsletter.
At my house we kept it easy, we didn't go out of town, but did grill out. In my opinion, I'm not sure if there is anything better than fresh corn on the cob, watermelon, onion rings and burgers on the grill. I missed the potato salad and coleslaw though. My grandmother's German potato salad would have been good, but we were lazy...so maybe we'll reconsider on the forth of July.
The nice thing is a lot of great food is coming into season now...you can get sweet corn and watermelon from Florida. You'll alos find that strawberries are becoming more available in the states just north of the Southern states. Check out your local Farmer's markets...it's a great way to get fruits and vegetables for much cheaper than you can buy at the store. Plus as a bonus you are helping your local community. In my garden we picked the spinach last week. The sugar snap peas are in full swing and my carrots will be ready in another 2-3 weeks.
Speaking of sugar snap peas, there is a really great recipe in the May 2009 issue of Cooking Light for Chicken Scaloppine with Sugar Snap Peas, Asparagus and Lemon. You can find it online here.
As for grilling for the next cookout...check out the June 2009 issue of Bon Appétit. They take grilling to the next level by combining seasonal vegetables in recipes that will dance on your taste buds. You'll find the Ultimate Summer Party Guide on pages 75 through 91. They give you three menus to choose from, the "Modern Fiesta" looks incredible.
Here is their Ultimate Summer Party Guide article online...
Happy Summer grilling!
