You'd Be Nuts Not To Eat Them

Men's Journal has a quick one pager on the nutritional value of keeping nuts in your diet and actually when to eat them. Did you know it's better to eat Macadamia nuts at breakfast? Almonds will aid in digestions. Peanuts are okay, but pistachios are way better for you, especially your eyes. Walnuts are a heart's best friend. The great thing is that you only need a handful a day to make a difference.

You'll find this article in the April 2009 issue of Men's Journal on page 56. Sorry, I wasn't able to find a copy of it online.

Prepare Yourself For Real Magic

It's interesting to me how there is a general feeling that people from civilizations 2000 years ago were not as mentally advanced as we are today. I'm not sure if that was so true. I have a feeling that more people at that time were worried more about survival than technological advancement. That doesn't mean they didn't dream big. I personally believe that the only thing that makes our society seem more advanced is our greatly improved manufacturing processes, more freedom for scientific exploration, and some fancy math equations.

Make Magazine 3-2009 There is a very cool recent issue of Make magazine about rediscovering lost knowledge.  In this first quarter 2009 issue you'll find an inspired article with Bruce Sterling's take on the Antikythera Device. To read about the complexities of this device being built well over 2000 years ago is fascinating to say the least.  It's too bad the Library at Alexandria was destroyed there is no telling how many other neat things were designed and built during that time that we still don't know about.

However we do know that it took another 1500 years before there was decent documentation of flying machines, tanks, missiles, and helicopters in the manuscripts of Leonardo da Vinci. Five hundred years later we have all that technology thinking people of remote antiquity would have never dreamed about.  Well get ready...if the world doesn't flip out over this whole "financial crisis" thing, you are about to see things that appear impossible. Literally, they will look like magic!

Remember this word: Metamaterials.

Seeing a virus attack a living human cell is impossible with current optical microscopes, but not a special microscope made from metamaterials. What, not impressed yet? What about a real invisibility cloak like in Harry Potter? How about magnetic plastic that doesn't contain iron? Countertop food factories sound cool don't they? My favorite is...real life mental telepathy, buh bye cell phones!  The next fifty years are going to be crazy cool and almost scary too.

Are you ready for change? You may even begin to question what it is that makes you human. Hold on to your hat because were at the top of the first big hill on this roller coaster.

Is It Time For Some Mental Spring Cleaning?

While driving to work this morning I was admiring the messy interior of my car. I haven't done any spring cleaning yet, so apparently between the clutter in my car and the clutter from an active 2 year old around the house, it occurred to me that my energy is being sapped by pure visual chaos.

Family Circle MagazineFamily Circle to the rescue! Pages 78 through 81 of the April 2009 issue has an article called - Clear Your Inner Clutter.  It's about removing mental stress by not only by cleaning up the physical space around you, but opening up your mental space by finding a balance through community, charity, and a sense of purpose.

The last half of the article makes a great point that the practice of mental clarity is individual to each person so there is no checklist of how or what is "correct." The recommendation is to focus your daily goals of balance, time, and communication. More basically said, making time for what makes you feel peaceful at least once a day. So check out this article before you begin Spring cleaning your mind, you'll be glad you did.
