Roasted Turkey In 70 minutes...No Way?

Yes way...according to Martha Stewart in the November 2009 issue.  I've never heard of this before, but apparently by cutting the backbone out and flattening out the whole turkey on a baking sheet will help you roast a juicy whole 12 pound turkey in a little over an hour.  How's that for a shortcut?

Honestly, if you don't ever serve you turkey at the table like what is shown on the magazine cover, then this cooking method sounds like a...Winner, Winner turkey dinner!! J

Reminiscing Of Days Remembered

Vanity Fair Magazine November 2009I will admit that I picked up the latest Vanity Fair because of the cover.  Penelope Cruz reminds me of the glowing glamorous actresses who dazzled the silver screen during the 30's, 40's and early 50's.  Nowadays, many actresses are in photo shoots that have a dark shock value or commercial looking I'm-trying-too-hard-to-sell-you-that-I'm-beautiful look.

It feels weird to me that I want my female entertainers to have a look from yesteryear. I'm not that old, but there is just something about the women in old black and white films that feels beautiful and pure.  I guess many of us want to see the world with rose colored glasses or at least a place where purity reigns.

If you pick up a copy of Vanity Fair, by all means read about Penelope's career if you want to, but then flip on back to page 190.  There is an amazing article about the artwork of Norman Rockwell. As we get closer to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays you always see more and more of his work on holiday cards. I've always liked his work, but I did not know he staged real photographs first to paint them.

Reminisce Magazine The interesting part is once you see the photos; you see what an amazing artist he truly was.  He was spectacular at catching the essence of expression in human form, but then the magic shines even brighter when you see how he improvises on top of the original captured scene.  Why is it that his images tap into our genes that yearn for a time and place when things seemed so pure?

You can actually read that article here online.  However, don't just look to this month's Vanity Fair to wax those nostalgic thoughts.  We carry several other magazines that will take you back to a time and place when life seemed a lot less complicated.  Check out Reminisce, Good Old Days, and Keep Rockin Magazine.

Table Scrap No-No's For Pets

Real Simple Magazine A few weeks again, my son was eating some red seedless grapes and dropped one. He called our miniature schnauzer over to "clean it up," but I yelled at the two cohorts, whisking away the offending morsel just in the nick of time.  I knew that you are not suppose to feed grapes/raisins or dark chocolate to dogs, but while throwing it in the trash I wondered if there were any other foods that the dog should not ingest.

Ask the question, and the universe provides.  I was flipping through the November issue of Real Simple, and what do you know, my off the cuff question was finally answered.  Turns out there are several other dangerous foods that also affect cats and birds too.

  • Chocolate (especially dark)
  • Grapes/Raisins
  • Garlic/Onions
  • Chewing gum with xylitol
  • Alcohol
  • Raw yeast/uncooked bread dough
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Avocados

Check out the article on page 54 of the November issue, it will tell you how each of these foods can damage your pet or even cause death.  You can find the article here online.
