The Billion Dollar Fantasy

Both college and NL football seasons are now in full swing; with that, once again the billion dollar industry of fantasy sports rides on the performances of real life. Honestly, I'm not much for fantasy sports, but I find the industry fascinating. The birth of the industry is even more interesting. Did you know that it was influenced by Jack Kerouac?

It almost seems improbable that this counterculture Beat novelist and poet could have devised such an invention of the imagination. It may have begun with one man, but now millions pay to play in every sport imaginable. So who makes money from the fantasy sports tribe? Check out the September 2009 issue of Entrepreneur magazine to see who the wealthy men are behind the curtain. You can read the article online here.

Make This Halloween The Best Ever

This is my wife's favorite season.  For most people their favorite holiday might be Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Easter, but not her. She loves Halloween.  I can seen the allure; it's one day a year you dress up and act like someone/something you are not without people thinking you're crazy. Well...at least that is what we are hoping right? J

Country Living MagazineThe real reason I think she loves it so much is because of the decorations. I've written before about the history behind Halloween and ghosts and mythical creatures, but I've never written about all the great pranks and freaky décor you can make to dress up your home.  My wife's prized magazine of the year is the October issue of Country Living.  Every year, they never fail to impress with their extensive list of fun and sometimes scary looking All Hallows Eve enhancements.

Then there is always the old faithful for throwing a Halloween party...the October issue of Martha Stewart Living.  I look forward to that one coming out next week. Now I did find a fun October issue of Cooking with Paula Deen.  She has a full menu of fun themed treats and appetizers for your upcoming ghoulish event.  The spider crab cakes looked delish! Here are recipes on her website for some other scary treats

Cooking With Paula Deen Of course, then there are those of us who love the extreme end of Halloween décor...so much so that we will even throw together a haunted house.  I'm not sure if they are going to do it again this year, but Make magazine had a special Halloween issue that shows the "professional" Halloween elite how to make fake blood, scars, and even ghosts that jump out via electronic trip wires.  As we get closer to major Maker holiday, check out their blog for some other cool ideas.

Bonus Tip...er uh...Trip?!

If you are looking for a fun trip to do during the weekend nights of October, visit Universal Studios in Orlando, FL.  I went last year with my wife and it was the best time at a theme park that I've ever had.  Halloween Horror Nights is where they shut the secondary park down early in the day and redecorate for several hours of themed night time entertainment.  Phenomenal is the best word I can use here.  The streets are smoky and all types of creatures roam amongst the crowds sometimes blending into the environment then jump out scaring you half to death.  Be forewarned though, some kids under 8 might find it too scary.  It is great for teenagers and grown-ups though.  Buy your tickets before the first week in October ...they sell out quick.

Scolionophobia - Is There A Cure?

Parents Magazine My son just started pre-pre-school and surprisingly he wasn't that afraid of going to school for the first time.  I'm not sure if it was due to the fact that he is only three or if it was all the socialization my wife did prior to his first year.  We'll see how he reacts when he goes to his first year of kindergarten.

The September 2009 issue of Parent's magazine has an excellent one page article that points out the problem spots a child may experience and how to calm their anxiety.  If you suspect your child may be having trouble check out page 152 or read it here online.
