Family Circle Offers Chex Mix Recipe

Posted Nov 21, 2010

At our house every year during the Holiday season we never go without making Chex Mix.  I almost forgot to make it before Thanksgiving this year until I saw my little reminder in the December issue of Family Circle. This month's Family Circle offers a great chex mix recipe.

Family Circle offers chex mix recipeThe recipe they give is close to what I usually make, but I’m a huge fan of cashews so I usually double up.  They call for a ¼ cup of butter…Ha! Ours usually ends up with at least 2 full sticks.  To quote the immortal words of Paula Deen... “You can never have too much butter.” I notice Family Circle’s recipe didn’t have garlic powder either.

You can find the recipe on page 160 of the December issue, but I think it is missing some key ingredients. Here is my version. I feel the Cheerios and thin pretzel sticks are better since they absorb more of the butter and Worcestershire sauce.  And to me, the rye chips are essential.

  • 2 sticks of butter, cut into ¼ inch pads
  • 2 tsp of seasoning salt (I prefer Lawry’s)
  • 5 tsp of Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp of garlic powder
  • 1 (10 oz) can of mixed nuts
  • 1 (10 oz) can of cashews (optional)
  • 1 box of Corn Chex
  • 1 box of Wheat Chex
  • 1 box of Rice Chex
  • 1 box of Cheerios
  • 1 (8 oz) bag of Gardetta’s Roasted Garlic Rye Chips
  • 3/4 box of Mister Salty thin Pretzel sticks
  1. Heat oven to 250 degrees
  2. Combine all ingredients into a large roasting pan EXCEPT for butter and seasonings
  3. Place pads of butter in a random pattern on the top of the mix then shake drops of Worcestershire sauce on the pads of butter and sprinkle a little of the seasoning salt and garlic powder over the top
  4. Place in over and cook for 15 minutes, then pull out, stir the mix thoroughly and then repeat step #3 over again every 15 minutes until you have reached one hour
  5. For the mix you are going to eat over the next two weeks you can keep in tins, you can freeze the rest if you would like

When I bring a gigantic tin of this up to the office, it is gone in less than 7 minutes. I promise it will be a huge hit at home too.  Find more great recipes and tips on keeping your family health and happy with a subscription to Family Circle, 15 issues a year for $15!
