A Cure For HIV?

In my opinion New York magazine is one of the best periodicals out there. The articles are always well written and they cover a wide range of interesting topics that are not really regionally based to New York alone. The news pieces are more in depth and do a great job of avoiding the world of opinion unlike most television news media these days.
In the June 6, 2011 issue of New York magazine, you’ll find an excellent article starting on page 26 that talks about the “The Man Who Had HIV and Now Does Not.” I did not know this, but Timothy Brown was actually cured of HIV (and leukemia) in 2008, but it took two years to hear about it in the mainstream media. You’d think that this would be a bigger ordeal, however according to the article; it appeared that no scientists/doctors wanted to believe it. Sometimes I wonder how many breakthroughs in medicine and technology get swept under the rug because of egos.
All opinions aside, the thing I find most useful about this story is that it gives you an excellent glimpse into the current status of medical technology for a disease that needs a cure because it is so dangerous. The concepts about zinc finger nucleases and the specific gene “delta 32” are the latest puzzle pieces that bring us all one step closer. Check it out if you have the time…you can read it here online.
