Why Do We Love People So Much?

Posted Oct 24, 2011

People magazine has been the top EBSCO magazine subscription ever since I started working here. It still continues to lead the pack by a huge margin.  I guess a majority of readers can’t get enough of the lives of people we want to love and those we want to despise.  In a time of less than desirable 24 hour news on TV, the glossy images of beautiful people can be a relaxing escape.

People Magazine

However, speaking of despise, I’m still unsure of how I feel about any of the Bernie Madoff family members getting so much media exposure recently.  Honestly, I didn’t lose any money from his Ponzi scheme personally, but what happened wasn’t right no matter which way you cut it. The October 31st issue of People Magazine had a story about Stephanie (Madoff) Mack's new book (The End of Normal).

Stephanie is the wife of the late Mark Madoff who was one of the sons who ratted out Bernie. Oddly enough though, it seems fishy to me that all the family members magically became book authors around the same time. I have a sneaking suspicion that none of these family members are hurting for money, so why sell a book? Is it really just a exercise in distancing yourself from the real criminal? Guess if life give you lemons...well, you know the rest.

Annnnnd...yes I realize I’m giving her more screen time by being bothered by seeing yet another Madoff steal a few more minutes of my coveted attention span, but isn’t that the genius of People magazine? They are professionals at framing up train wrecks and inviting you to care on a weekly basis. Their diabolical plan to dominate the world is almost complete. You got me (again) this time People Magazine. :-)

You know you can’t resist, go ahead and get your own copy.
